I am not a coffee drinker. I know this puts me in the minority of adults in this country, but I just don’t like the bitterness. When I’m looking for a warm beverage I will go for tea, or, if I’m being more indulgent, hot chocolate.
Hot chocolate is a special beverage treat, and I will confess to spending a fair amount of money trying all kinds of gourmet hot chocolate mixes and blends that I have found in fancy grocery stores. Really though, this homemade hot chocolate mix is hard to beat, comes in at a fraction of the price, and is made with ingredients I always have on hand. I blend up a batch of this mix and store it in a mason jar for some quick and easy hot chocolate on demand. I recommend you make some for yourself, or consider gifting it to a friend. You won’t regret it!
Pro Tips:
Honestly, any unsweetened cocoa powder works well- use what you like and what you have on hand. I have tried a variety of cocoa powders in different recipes to see what I like best. In general, I use Hershey’s for most of my baking, but I found that the “fancy” Droste cocoa that a lot of bakers recommend makes for really good hot chocolate.
I suggest using dairy or nut milk. The “just add water” mixes you find generally have powdered milk as a primary ingredient. This recipe does not use powdered milk.
